Mills Williams Junior Fellow in Conducting

(apprenticeship / academy position)
Applications are invited for this much sought-after 12-month position which provides one young conductor, on the cusp of entering the profession, an opportunity to gain widespread experience with our professional partners and the RNCM’s full range of orchestras and ensembles. During the programme, the Junior Fellow has the opportunity to work as assistant conductor with the region’s professional orchestras including the BBC Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Northern Ballet, Manchester Camerata, and others. They assist a fully staged opera production, including conducting a performance, and work with visiting conductors on RNCM orchestral projects, usually conducting a work in the concert. Additionally, they provide conducting for various other RNCM Orchestras and Ensembles and have the opportunity to develop teaching and coaching skills. There is normally at least one performance opportunity with a professional orchestra during the year.

Junior Fellows are fully involved as students in the RNCM’s conducting programme, led by Professor Mark Heron and Professor Clark Rundell. Our International Chair in Conducting, Nicolás Pasquet, visits several times a year and other recent guest teachers include Marin Alsop, Anja Bihlmaier, Martyn Brabbins, Alpesh Chauhan, Ed Gardner, Ludovic Morlot, Vasily Petrenko, Domingo Hindoyan, Jorma Panula, Nicolas Pasquet, Elena Schwarz, John Storgårds, Omer Meir Wellber, Mark Wigglesworth and Simone Young.
