YMSQ, the sister school of the world-renowned Yehudi Menuhin School, UK, is located in Qingdao, a beautiful coastal city of Shandong Province in North East China. It is situated amidst a picturesque seaside park and surrounded by institutions and schools rich in artistic culture, such as art galleries and academies. The architecture of the School visually reflects the rhythm, tempo, and agility found in music while integrating the precision and artistry of musical performance into its internal structures. Recognising the importance of acoustic design for a high-level music-focused school, the acoustic design of the complex was commissioned from the internationally-renowned Japanese expert Yasuhisa Toyota.
YMSQ is the only K12 institution in the world which offers specialist music programmes alongside a comprehensive academic curriculum. It was opened in September 2022, and has made rapid growth to accommodate a roll of over 150 pupils and 110 staff and will eventually be home to around 800 musically-gifted students. The School boasts a team of top-tier educators and musicians from various countries and is strongly supported by the Chinese government. Providing a truly holistic education is central to the School’s founding philosophy. The School’s provision is centered on the national Chinese curriculum between Grades 1-9, and then focuses on tailored courses leading to Cambridge IGCSE, AS and A Level qualifications from Grades 10-12. This unique approach places YMSQ at the forefront of specialist music education in South East Asia. Despite its infancy, YMSQ already has an enviable track record of success, with all of its graduating students having attained offers from the conservatoire destinations of their choice, including the finest music colleges in the UK, Europe and the USA.
Whilst the School’s mission is to train the performing and teaching musicians of the future, it is equally committed to supporting the academic ambitions of its students, such that they graduate with a wide skill-set which ensures that they are able and prepared to pursue their individual interests.
