O/Modernt (Swedish for ‘Un/Modern’) is the concept devised by violinist and O/Modernt artistic director Hugo Ticciati (www.omodernt.com/hugoticciati). Combining old and new in unexpected ways, O/Modernt celebrates connectivity in and through music in conjunction with other arts, aiming to bring about a heightened awareness of connections that span times, cultures and peoples. The diverse international programme of activities is focused on exploring artistic links between contemporary culture and the cultures of previous epochs, bringing together people from all walks of life, and re/connecting people with themselves by promoting active, imaginative engagement with music and the arts. An outward-looking, inclusive organisation, passionate about breaking down boundaries, O/Modernt’s philosophy is summed up in the motto, borrowed from John Cage: Invent the past; revise the future.
O/Modernt operates internationally at the highest level of music making, and its flagship Chamber Orchestra is resident at the Queen Silvia Concert Hall in Stockholm. Recent collaborations have included artists such as Evelyn Glennie, Steven Isserlis, Ian Bostridge, Anne Sofie von Otter and Nils Landgren, with regular performances at London’s Wigmore Hall, Konzerthaus Berlin, Wiener Musikverein, Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, Amsterdam and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. The ensemble’s album From the Ground Up: The Chaconne won the Gramophone Concept Album Award in 2020.
