Orchestral Conducting | Juilliard Extension

Effective conductors need versatile skills adaptable to any setting. This course is designed for conductors, composers, instrumentalists, and singers with prior training and experience in conducting. Students explore aspects of orchestral conducting including score study and preparation, approaches to rehearsal and performance, knowledge of instrument groups and musical styles, and specificity and grace with or without a baton. The course emphasizes spontaneous, flexible problem-solving to achieve fluent communication with musicians for a maximally artistic result. Placement application required unless pre-approved to enroll. This is a yearlong course.
