Exotica (Mauricio Kagel) - workshop and concerts

Exotica is one of Mauricio Kagel’s most emblematic scores. Written in 1970-71 for the modern art exhibition organized on the occasion of the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, it had its first performance on 23 June of that year, conducted by the composer himself and with a formidable group of performers. None of them played their instrument, but each alternated, according to the composer’s instructions, over 20 instruments from all over the world. Kagel's intention with Exotica was to question the dominance of Western music and to return to the primordial origins of music, but he also wanted to push performers into an exercise of openness to the different, the unfamiliar and unpredictable. Divertimento Ensemble will select 6 musicians who, in a week of workshops, will learn to familiarize themselves with over 100 instruments from all over the world, will study Exotica score and perform it in two concerts, in Biella (June 29th) and Milan (June 30th).
