The oldest symphony orchestra in the Czech Republic - the West Bohemian Symphony Orchestra (WSO) - is based in beautiful Mariánské Lázně, in the heart of Europe. Its history is closely linked to the rise of Mariánské Lázně as a spa resort. Since its founding in 1821, this enduring musical ensemble has undergone many changes. Musicians and many conductors have brought innovations with them. The last change took place in 2001; the WSO became a non-profit organization under the sponsorship of the city of Mariánské Lázně. The year-round operation of the orchestra consists of subscription symphony concerts, regular concerts on the colonnade during the summer season and concerts outside Marienbad in the towns of the Karlovy Vary Region and in neighboring Germany.
